Lewis, who was brought back from Sydney, by warrant, on a charge of stealing £4lO, and who was remanded from last Wednesday, was dismissed this morning, the prosecution offering no evidence. N.Z. NURSES AT THE FRONT. WELLINGTON, April 26. Th e Defence Department has received intimation from Egypt that 335 nurses are on the New Zealand Expeditionary Force books there, of whom 201 are now being paid by the New Zealand Department. Of these, only 91 are employed in New Zealand establishments. General Godley suggests that/ fijo' additional nurses be sent there at present.

BENZINE TANK TAKES FIRE. DAMAGE ONLY SLIGHT. TAUMARUNI, April 26. ‘The Waireka, a river boat from Wanganui to Taumaruni, on Tuesday, met with a mishap at Hikimatu, between the house boat and here. Owing to engine trouble she pulled into the side, when a leaking benzine tank took fire. The passengers were landed safely, one being slightly singed. The awning was burned and passengers’ bags slightly damaged, but no luggage dlas damaged. The damage to the vessel was slight. This was her last trip before refitting with new engines. The mails were saved. The accident was in no way due to navigation, but purely engine trouble. The passengers arrived here at noon today.

EMPIRE PARLIAMENTARY ASSOCIATION. BRITISH INVITATION ACCEPTED. WELLINGTON, April 26. N.Z. members of the Empire Parliamentary Association met this afternoon. There was a good attendance, including Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward. The purpose was the selection of four members to visit the conference in Loudon in response to the invitation of the Home Association. Five members of the Upper House and 19 of the Lower Chamber signified their willingness to go if accepted. This does not include any Ministers. The invitation was accepted, but the selection of representatives was postponed. They will be chosen on the morning of May 9th before the opening of Parliament.
