THE BRAVE AND THE FAIR.
He was a fighting Briton, returned from the front, but with the handsome face with which he left England permanently disfigured by the cruel edges of shrapnel. She, to whom he had declared his love, and who awaited his return for the marriage arranged, asked to meet him on ,his arrival. He, begged her not to do so. She, when they met, aghast at the sightless eye and the multilated fair face —declined to marry him. He months later, came into £BOOO a year. She, in a letter of repentance and golden remorse, asked for forgiveness. He, in a word, responded that he was just as disfigured as on the date of her rejection. Oh, the pity of this true story. —“The Gentlewoman.”*
