TRADE OF THE EMPIRE.
INDEPENDENT OF THE ENEMY. SIR T.' MACKENZIE'S ASSURANCE. The efforts which have recently been put forward in England for the promotion of trade within the Empire form th e subject of some interesting comments by the High Commissioner for New Zealand in a letter which has just been received by Major D. H. Lusk, of Auckland. Sir Thomas Mackenzie is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Board of Trade, and •he states that he i s very pleased with the work that has been done. Referring to the display of British manufactured goods which was made during the past 12 months, he remarks that it was a great success both as regards quality and prices.
"It was clearly demonstrated," adds Sir Thomas, "that we can supply from British sources almost every article that .has hitherto been supplied by the Germans, and of better quality, and at as low a price. But we received word that the Germans can undersell us when the war, is over." The New Zealand Commissioner succeeded in having a committee set up to inquire into the question of our trade relations with the enemy, our capacity to supply, and the part the Dominions might play. "About a fortnight ago," he writes, "the report cam e up, and I am glad to say it is about to engage the attention of Parliament, when, I believe,, a tariff will be established which will strike the enemy, be agreeable to our alios, and of enormous advantage not only to the Mother Country, but to the oversea Dominions as well."
