ITALIANS PUSHING ON. • ROME, April 12. A communique says: By a methodical offensive we have extended our ground to the heights northward of Rio Pogale Ledro Valley. Our infantry stormed strong entrenchments and [along the slopes of Mount Pari and Cimadoro, and on the rocks at Mount Perone. The enemy, sustaining heavy losses, retired. A SOUTH AFRICAN OFFER. SUGGESTED FORCE OF 50,000 MEN TO FIGHT ON WESTERN FRONT. JOHANNESBURG, April 12. " Sir Joseph Robinson has offered a very large sum to assfst in the despatch of 50,000 South Africans to help Britain on the Western front. He says Britain requires assistance to defeat the enemy there, and urges the Government to follow the example of Canada and Australia.
BRITAIN'S NEW TAXES. RAILWAY TICKET TAX REMOVED. MATCHMAKERS' OBJECTIONS WITHDRAWN. LONDON, April 12. As a result of discussion with the Treasury and Customs officials, the match manufacturers have withdrawn i their opposition to the tax, and -will resume deliveries next week. AUSTRALIA AND CONSCRIPTION. MELBOURNE, April 13. Replying to a deputation from the Australian Natives' Association, urging Conscription, Senator Pearce said the strongest argument against conscription was that the State should exercise is discretion as to who were sent and who had to remain. He did not think more men would be sent than under voluntary enlistment. Referring to the war census, fie said that 120,000 singles between 18 and 44 had refused to enlist. He thought that at present there were plenty available, and ccnscription was unnecessary.
