Of William Grainger, tried at the Old Bailey (London) for bigamy and theft, it was said that he was a “professional enlisten. ’ ’ Grainger appeared in the 'dock wealing khaki. It was stated that ho had become ‘acquainted with three scrvani girls, and in two eases the banns of marriage were published. While under arrest he wrote promising marriage to one girl, and at the same time obtained money from another for special license fees.
There -were manj 1 - previous convictions, and he had been sentenced four times by courts-martial for fraudulent enlistment. The recorder: He was fraudulently enlisting long before the war?- —-Wit ness: The war was the very thing for him. He could enlist every day if hr wanted to.
Graingen had Joined the King’s E'-y----al Rifles, and was twice arrested as an absentee. He was discharged from the regiment, and enlisted in anothoname. He had also fraudulently obtained a separation allowance by renresenting that he had a. wife and child Five years’ penal servitude was the sentence.
