BOMBS IN IRELAND.

A military expert in explosives has examined a quantity of explosives and bombs found concealed in a drain at Leixlip, County Kildare, on the 2nd February., The quantity of explosives, which was large, consisted of gi lignite, a very high explosive of /the dynamite class, and a large quantity of gunpowder and smokeless powder in tins. There were nine bombs, constructed from small tins with handles.. These were filled with sharp pieces of iron and the heads of bolts packed round a gelignite cartridge, into which was inserted a detonator attached to a few inches of safety fuse-.

A remarkable case under the Defence of the Realm Act was heard at the Dublin City Commission by Mr. Justice Madden, when a young man named Alexander McCabe, of Ballymote, County Sligo, who had been a school teacher and a member of the Irish Volunteers (Sinn Fein), was charged with having 'explosives in his possesion at Sligo on November 15 last. The evidence which was called for the Crown showed that on that evening the prisoner was taken into custody at Sligo railway station. A bag which he was carrying was found to contain 42 gelignite cartridges, 20 detonators, and six coils of fuse. In his pocket was found an automatic pistol with a magazine attached. He had also a list of what we're apparently purchases of gunpowder, gelignite, rifles, bayonets, fuses, and ammunition. "When his house near Ballymote was searched the police found an African revolver, 235 cartridges, five service rifles, cartridges, and 28 Morris tubes. T'.i e defence was that prisoner had the explosives for the purpose of killing fish in rivers, and an expert witness who had been 'called 'for the Crown said that the quantity of gelig--1 nite would not cause very extensive damage.

The .jury acquitted tire prisoner, the verdict being received "with applause by bis friends' in the Court. As tfiere is another charge against him he was put back for th e present.
