LABOUR NEWSPAPERS. .UNION FUNDS NOT TO BE USED. SYDNEY.. April 5. A heated scene occurred in the Assembly when Mr. Estell' moved the acceptance of the Legislative Council's amendments in the Trades Unions Bill, providing that money and property of a union shall not be applied to the furtherance of political objects by the publication of a newspaper, other than a non-political trade journal. Several feabour members objected on the ground that they had not been consulted.
Mr. Holman explained that a caucus meeting, with a smal? attendance, approved Mr. Estell's action. If members were not present it was their own fault. He announced that if the caucus decision was not accepted, Cabinet would forthwith resign. Mr. Cochrane declared that h e did not care if the Government did resign. The adoption of the clause meant the abandonment of the principles of Labour.
Other war speeches were made, after which the amendment was adopted by 32 to 25.
