Mr. John Ellison, lately retiviid from the Superintendeney of Police, was the recipient of a presentation from the citizens. 'ln the course <rf a few remarks, Mr. Ellison satd there vus far too much red tape in the police force and too much clerical work. Everybody made out his own report, entailing a great deal of unnecessary labour. There was also too much work thrown on the head office in Wellington. The head of the department was away from the city about one-third of his time and during his absence the Wellington chief had to do the work of two men. Mr. Ellison eulogised the capabilities of his successor (Superintendent 0-'Donovan-)'and predicted that he"wa3 sure to rise to the top. "Then we may have something better."
