It is expected that the complete wheat returns will not be ready until the end of April.
Lieutenant W. Gibbs, at one time headmaster of the Ngawaka School, is on a visit to this district, and is staying with his brother, Mr. C. Gibbs. Lieutenant Gibbs is attached to B Company, 12th Eeinforcements and expects to leave about the end of April.
A black and tan, bobtailed dog, answering to the name of Toy, lost from Ohutu, is advertised for by Mr. W. Prime, who will give a, reward of 10/ for its return.
It is understood that the Wairsjrapa Prospecting Society has the option of prospecting over 2,000 acres of land ii) the vicinity of Kaitoke for coal. A deal of machinery has been se'eured and arrangements are being made foT an early start. It is expected the venture will prove successful.
The Engineer of the Eangitikei County Council is calling for. tenders for "works at Potaka Koad, Kawhatau, Mangaweka., and on the Ohumoko Eoad, eight miles from Kauangaroa. The tenders are to be in by Friday, 7th April,, and plans and specification? may be seen at Mangaweka, and at Jas. Campion's residence, Arawata. Kauangaroa.
In another column appears the announcement that Mr. E. B. Jennings, who has for some years practiced as a public accountant and auditor in this district, is going on active service shortly, and during his absence -his work will be carried on by Mr. C. Masters, of Hastings, who is a fully qualified accountant (by exam.) of long experience.
On Monday two men, W. Garlick and C. A. Groves, left Taihape foi camp as extra men for the 14th Reinforcements.
Staff-Sergeant-Major Tuckey has still vacancies in the infantry quota for the 15th Reinforcements. The men will leave Taihape for camp on Monday next.
The erection of a Catholic hall at Featherstcn Camp is being carried out by the Hierarch3 r , and collections are being made at all the churc-hes to oV fray the cost. About £I,OOO is requited, and the response so far has been ver\ satisfactorv.
The season for red deer shooting in this district opens on April 1 and closes on May.3l. This district comprises Taihape, Tararu'a, and the Hutt. Licenses are obtainable at any post office in the district.
The lltli Beinforcements are being reviewed by Lord Liverpool to-day at Trentham, and on Saturday they will mach through the streets of Wellington.
Mr. D. J. MeLennan h.?.s been instructed by Mr. W. Jackson, who is leaving the district, to sell the whole of his household furniture, musical instruments, incubator, brooder, Perfection stove, bone cutten, and a large and varied quantity of gardener's and carpenter's tools. Also, horse,, gig and •harness, saddle and bridl'e, cow in profit, heifer calf,, bacon pig, two slips, horse and cow covers, and many other useful machines and articles. The sale is to take place at Mr. Jackson's residence, on the Winiata Koad, on Thursday, 6th April, at 2 p.m. sharp.
Women are playing a prominent, jart in harvesting in Southland tins season, driving reapers, stooking and stacking. .Wives and daughters of farmers are turning to with a will, and some of them are receiving the standard wage of Is 3d per hour.
