THE OUTLOOK FOR FARMING.
In his address to the Timara A. and P. Association on Saturday, the retiring president (Mr. T. Teschemaker) made some optimistic remarks regarding the outlook from a farming point of view. He said: "In spite of this dreadful) war and the large subscriptions collected from all qparters, I think the farming community as a whole has not much to complain of. While quite admitting that the drought has been severely felt in this district, yet New Zealand as a whole has had a good year, and when I see that woo! 1 has increased by 25 pen cent, over last year's prices, that the estimated return for the year's clip would be 12 to 13 millions as against nine millions last' year and seven millions for 1913, I think we ought to be grateful for such results. The Government estimate fon grain this season is: Wheat, 7,309,020 bushels, as against 6,644,336 bushels, the actual yield for 1915; and oats, 12,722,733 bushels* as against 11,436,301 actual yield for 1915. From this it would appear that our production will exceed our local requirements. Butter, cheese, potatoes, and lambs are fetching good prices, and although there are drawbacks and losses I only hope we may see as good returns for New Zealand for years to come.- I am also glad to see money so plentiful, good securities being hard to obtain, which is a good sign, and shows the prosperity of the Dominion."
