COMPULSORY SERVICE. f MELBOURNE, March 23, The annual conference of the Australian Natives’ Association resolved that the needs of the war could no longer be met by the voluntary system, and urged the Commonwealth to take immediate stops to utilise fully the services of every citizen and ttie resources of the Commonwealth. NEW AUSTRALIAN UNIT. MELBOURNE, March 23. The Government has agreed to the formation of a wireless signal unit forservice abroad. AUSTRALIAN CASUALTIES. TOTAL REACHES 41,427. SYDNEY, March 23.The total casualties are 41,427. These include (5,749 dead, 10,844 wounded, and 21,7(56 sick. List No. 156 includes the following New Zealanders:— El.—Private- E J Angrove. In hospital at Heliopolis.—-Convales-cent, Sergeant J Dick; out of danger. Private J E Considine; returned to duty. Corporal W E Anderson, Privates K‘ W MeKnight, F Connell, C F Hall, W G- Knowles. GERMANS IN PUBLIC SERVICE. SYDNEY, March 23. In reply to persistent heckling in. the Assembly, Mr,. Holman stated that of 200 employees of German birth ia the Public Service at the beginning of the war, 64 had been retained. All were naturalised. The Government was satisfied that all were loyal Australian citizens and accepted full responsibility for retaining them, SYDNEY WOOL SALES. SYDNEY, March 2.t At the wool sales the offerings were mostly medium and poor. They closed steady at recent levels.
