SATURDAY, MARCH 18, 1916. ANOTHER WEEK OF WAR.
(With which is incorporated The Tai hape Post and Waimarino News.)
Little less significant than the winning of the battle of Verdun is the sensational decline of the value of German money. It is a recedence, not of a local character, such as occurred in connection with the payment for munitions by Britain, when a surfeit of gold was created in America, but it is general and universal in all countries not allied of~connected with Germany. From America we learn that the mark has dropped over a third of its value; similar news is cabled from Denmark which speaks for the whole of Scandinavia and perhaps other places. The importance to Germany of this is plainly shadowed by the desperate efforts that German financiers are making in America to check it. In American finance circles, Germans have considerable influence, yet they have no power to stem the downward rush in the value of their country's mark, despite the strenuous efforts they are putting l forth. This sensational economic disadvantage is the sequence to the battle Of Verdun, and we are told that it discloses to the world's perception that Germany is nearing financial and military collapse. It is certainly one of the best evidences, if not the only convincing evidence, that has yet reached us indicating that the central powers have passed the zenith of their strength; that their striking force is declining while that of the Allies is in the flush of ascendancy. German money will now purchase one-third less of what she vitally needs to feed her people, and to buy material to continue making war munitions; she is having to pay three hundred pounds for that ishe previously could purchase with two hundred. We have only to mentally place the Allies in Teuton shoes to realise the smashing blow this must be to the German people.
