A SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT

A man giving the name of Cornelius Murphy, was found on Sunday morning wandering down one of the side roads near Messrs Lupton Bros.’ property (Waverley). The man was in a very weak state and considerably knocked about, having some severe wounds on the face and head, his hands and Iges being also cut and bruised. The doctor and police were notified and the sufferer was removed to the Patea Hospital. From an examination of the man the constable surmised that he had fallen from the train going north on Saturday night and had been unconscious most of the night, but had recovered sufficiently in the morning to walk away. A subsequent search along the line proved the surmise to be correct, for a quantity of hair was found on the stones at the side of the line near Luptoifs crossing and a short distance away a watch glass was found, and a spot which indicated that the man had been lying there all night. A box of matches and blood stains were also found in the vicinity. In one of the 1 man’s pockets was found a small book containing the addresses of various people, and on the first page was the name Cornelius Murphy.' There was also a railway ticket dated March 10 from Auckland to Haw era. The man stated he was going to Hawera where his wife lived. He also said that he had friends in Patea. He had been *away for two years on a visit to the Old Country and was returning home.
