Mr. R. W., Smith, M.P., who -has been endeavouring to arrange for the provision of a rifle range in the vicinity of Ohakune, has received the following letter from the Minister for Defence (Hon. Jas. Allen):— Office of Minister for Defence, Wellington, March 11, 191(5.

Dear Sir, —In reply to your minute of 26th January, forwarding a letter from Mr. A. E. Turner, Ohakune; 'ion. secretary, Ruapehu Rifle; Club, in reference to the position of a rifle range ii the vicinity of O-hakune, I have to ' form you that the position is as fellows: The site suggested on Mr. Richardson's property, situated between Ohakune and Rattihi, has been examined, and it is not considered either safe' or suitable for a rifle ):ange; further. in the country between these centres, owing to its flatness and close settlement, there is no site suitable for rifle range purposes. It is accordingly proposed to utilise the rifle range reserve at Karioi, a few miles south of Ohakune, for the Raetihi and Ohakune district, and preliminsjry plans and estimates for the construction of the required range on the Karioi site are now being prepared.—Yours faithfully, (Signed) J.
