THE OHAKUNE WINTER SHOW.
It is pleasing to note that the Ohakune Agricultural and Pastoral Association has not abandoned its .Winter Show. It is very discouraging to find, at times, that through bad weather the winter show is rendered unprofitable, but it is also disappointing to an extreme where time and expense have not been spared by men loyal to their district to find that they have not been taken at face value even by others who have everything to gain in pushing forward any function that tends to increase the popularity of their territory, and. seouential’y, to increase the value of their hand. There is no disputing that the town is both the index and the frontispiece to the volume of Ohakune back country, and if settlers and farmers desire the utmost publicity respecting the capabilities of their land they must support the exhibitions of their produce, which have come into existence for that veiy object. Present d'ay farmers should not forget that, even in England and other European countries farmers found it a payable prorositon to organic and hold similar shows, paying the whole of the evnense out of their own nockets, and if present day farmers had to do so they would figure out fe- themselves the benefits derivable, with advantage to evervons concerned. Tim aim of an Agricultural and Pastoral show is not more pleasure, hut. p-methinn- very much more serious: it is bold for the same mirpose that a national or even an interna-
ity of a territory’s production, with a view to greater intercourse and better prices. This is a form of advertising that is indispensable in any farming locality. When 'a farmer commences specialising, be it in stud breeding or fruit-farming, he soon finds that be has to adopt some method of letting the outside world know what lie is doing, or he will remain a mediocrity or else a failure. The more he advertises himself the more valuable will his stud flock or his fruit farm become. Of course it will, farmers cannot do without their particular form of advertising; it is almost true to say the world lives on advertising, and the more support farmers in the Ohakime district give to their shows the more rapid will their land increase in value bringing better roads and improved means of communication. If there is one thing we may be permit-
ted to say to our Ohakune friends it is, “Support your agricultural and pastoral shows through their periods of adversity, the time will come when
you will be proud to support them.”
