THE DEATH OF THE KAISER.
I . "AN EVENT OF ENORMOUS SIGNIFICANCE. M. Arthur Meyer, director of the Paris Gaulois, publishes in that journal a striking special article with .regard to the i'lness of the German Emperor.
| After expressing the opinion that the real nature of the Kaiser's malady is a secret in the hands of three or four people, and that neither the Empress, the Crown Prince, the Chancellor, nor the Emperor's doctor will let r-'ic truth be known, even to the'German people, M. Meyer says:— 'I am one of those who think that the death of the Kaiser would considerably shorten the war, and that it would be an event of enormous significance.
,"I make no secret of the fact that before t-he war I was greatly deceived in the character of William 11. He appeared determined to assure the prosperity of his beloved Empire by peaceful means, and to secure for himself the title of Emperor of Peace. But the mask has fallen, and he stands exposed—a barbarian. "Under a pacific exterior., nourishing in his heart the most infernal plan ever conceived, he succeeded in hoodwinking Europe. The diabolical achievements of German militarism during the past seventeen months are not the result of an improvisation; they are the fruits of long and patient work, comenced on the first day of his reign. Th e Crown Pririce may succeed his father; he will never replace him.
"William 11. is the leader of an orchestra- which, without him, will be plunged into inconceivable discord. It is he who leads and guides everything, and everything that diminishes his personal action improves our chances of early victor}'. "Let us ask only of God that He will accord enough time to William 11. to become sensible of our irresistible force and the frailty of his own wol'fc As dying Nero, before the ruins w-hioh h e accumulated and the massacres which he ordered, so ought William 11. to say: 'Of what a worker of hate is the world delivered!'
"And when he quits this world's scene for the spheres of eternity he will perceive, be-hind the curtain, that only that is great and beautiful which is beneficent, and that all work founded on destruction is doomed, before long.j to be destroyed in its turn.'*
