AN ANSWER TO.SHIP SEIZING. (Reed. 9.45 a.m.) y E’ER LIN, March 9. Germany has declared war against Portugal. GERMANS ADVISED TO QUIT PORTUGAL. A RUPTURE REGARDED INEVITABLE. (Reed. 9.20 a.m.) x : LISBON, March 9. The German Consul has advised all Germans to quit Portugal immediately as a rupture is regarded as inevitable. A FRENCH REPORT OF VERDUN. BOMBARDING GERMAN COMMUNICATIONS IN THE ARGON NE. GERMAN ATTEMPT TO REPAIR FAILURES. STOPPED BY FRENCH CURTAIN FIRE. FRENCH RECAPTURES BEING CONSOLIDATED. . ALL GERMAN ASSAULTS COMPLETELY REPULSED. (Reed. 9:20 a.m.) PARIS, March 9. A French communique states: We continued bombarding German communication lines in the 'Eastern Argonne. The Germans westward of the Meuse repeatedly attempted during the night, to* {repair yesterday's failure Two attempted attacks on Bettencourt; preceded by mten'se artillery preparations, were stopped by our curtain fire, and thus prevented the Germans from debouching on Crows Wood. Renewed efforts, failed to dislodge us from a wide area we recaptured, and which we are consolidating. Fighting eastward of the Meuse is continued with obstinacy every night. Several strong attacks were made on French entrenched positions between Douaumont and Vaux by th e enemy, despite the intensity of their artillery fire and the violence of their assaults, they were completely repulsed. Seme element of German infantry momentarily penetrated Vaux, but they were driven out with the bayonet.
