OUGHT TO SHAME THE SHIRKERS
Great efforts and sacrifices are made by some Australians anxious to enlist for active service. At Alton Downs, a few miles out from Rockhampton, one asked to be entered. Bit by bit they dragged out his story. Having been turned down at Georgetown for being below the height, he set out for Rockhampton, 1,200 miles away, to try his luck. He lost five horses on the way and now offered his last prad, worth £2O, besides himself. The recruiting officer premised to do his best to get him through. An army couldn’t afford to turn down pluck like that even if the bit of grit was m more than 4ft to the top.
