TURKEY STARTED PEACE ARRANGEMENTS

FIGHT AT VERDUN RECOMMENCED ON THURSDAY. MOST VIOLENT OPERATION GERMANS EVER ATTEMPTED.

THE ENEMY’S LOSSES YESTERDAY WERE ENORMOUS

FIGHTING ON CORPSE COVERED GROUND

GERMANS FAILED IN THE FIRST ACT.

WILL FARE NO BETTER IN THE SECOND

THE FRENCH HAVE UTMOST CONFIDENCE

(Reed. 8.50 .am.)

PARIS, February 3

Semi-official; The battle at Verdun was renewed on Thursday, enemy operations being marked as 'a serious recrudescence.. As we foresaw this is the second phase of the most violent efforts that the Germans have ever attempted against us. All evidence shows that Verdun was chosen for attack because the wooded region hampered aerial reconnaisance. We were aware of tremendous preparations for three months, but possibly did not realise its full importance. Yesterday’s attack was extremely violent, the enemy’s losses over broken ground which was already covered with corpses, were enormous. Nowhere have they gained a footing in our trenches.. We took the fullest advantage of the three days’ respite and the issue may be awaited with the fullest confidence. The first act in the battle faile'd, and the second will not meet with any better success.
