HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT,
WELLINGTON, Feb. 28,
' r 'ie High Commissioner’s cable, dated London, February 26, is as follows: (Note, Quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot.)
Meat.—The market remains firm for all descriptions of frozen meat, owing to the short supply available, together with a decrease in the amount of homekilled.
Gitton. — Canterbury 7 5-8, oCpthan Canterbury not quoted. Ewes 7-}d. Lamb. Canterbury Bld for all weights, second grade Bd, other brands Canterbury, this season’s 9d. Beef.—New Zealand cow beef, hinds 61 d, fores 5Jd; chilled, a small supply, hinds 8 3-Bd, fores 7d.
Butter. —The market is firm. There is a good demand for the finest and little demand for lower quality. Danish, firm, per cwt 172/, 174/ to 176/; New Zealand, firm, 158/, unsalted 160/ to 164/, fair to good quality (poor demand) 150/ to 156/. The Australian market is practically cleared at 150/ to 152/. Siberian (good demand), for best quality 126/ to 130/, exceptional quality 134/. Argentine, firm, 146/.
Cheese. The marker is firmer. Canadian market quiet, but firm. White and coloured per cwt 99/ to 100/. New Zealand is in good demand, white 95/ to 96/, coloured 96/ to 973. English Cheddar, firm, 106/ to 108/; Cheshire 114/ to 120/. United States is firm. Cheddar shapes 96/ to 97/, flats 95/ to 96/. Hemp. The market is quiet, but steady. New Zealand good fair, per ton on spot £47 10/, fair £45 10/. Spot prices are nominal, as no supply is on hand for February and April shipment. New Zealand good fair £46 10/, fair £44 10/. Manilla, new graded, fair £55 10/, coarse £53. The output from Manila for the week ended February 26th was 33,000 bales.
Kauri Gum. At the gun sales hold this week no kauri gum was offered.
Wheat. The American market declined daring this week. The London market is steady, but prices are rather low. Canadian, on spot, per qr. 69/. February-March shipment 68/. ' Good business was done with Argentine shipments. Prices are nominal; FebruaryMarch shipment, steamer 70/, sailer 68/6.. Buyers are cautious on account of the high prices.
Oats.—The market is firm with an improved demand,. Argentine on spot, per qr. 33/, afloat 32/. Hops.—The market is active with a good demand. Supplies ar e decreasing. English 140/ to 150/. Californian 100/ to 120/.
Linseed. The market is quiet; shipments are expected from the Argentine. Quotations are nominal on passage, per 4161 b, Argentine 74/, Indian 82/6. Wool. Bradford tops Id lower.
