ANOTHER RISE.

IX THE PEICE OF PAFEE. Paper prices tliis week have advanced by id per lb over the rates which came into force in the first week in December last (says the Sydney Morning- Herald of the 4th hist.) The trade has been excited over the increases, and there has been free buying because of the fear that prices will advance still further. The reports concerning the restriction of paper imports into England and Ah e restriction of wood pulp exports from Scandinavia, apparently started the excitement. The cables received from private sources all suggest a tight market. One states:

"Sailings from Scandinavia are irregular, also very limited. Cargo awaiting shipment is hugely in excess of available tonnage." Another cable is to the effect. "Can promise nothing. Eo prepared for great delays. Xew prohibition export pulp is likely to increase prices generally." From Xew York it is cabled, "Eaihvay will not carry, so cannot ship at .any price. Steamers now ask 40 to 50 dollars ■ight guineas to ten guineas at an exchange of 4.75 dollars) measurement." Eon don cables. "Cannot quite; panic conditions prevail." What prices today mean may be judged from these two instances. White printing before the war was T;d per lb, in December it was 2 7-Sd, now it is 3d'. Again, art paper, which before the war was 4d uer lb, in December it had advanced to 5 3-Sd, now it is 0 l-Sd. Another art paper, which before the war cost 4Ad ! now costs 7Ad. Printing paper, which most of the country newspapers use. quad crown 42. cost formerly 7/ per ream. Xow the cost is 1.1/4A, an increase of more than 50 pier cent. Again, ,if we compare prices of MF printing we find that formerly it was 11 '3, now it is 25/7A per ream. Double printing j paper, coloured, cost S/0, no w it is listed at ]S/4Ad. Coming to cards, we ■ind that while thin ivory thirds, with square corners, wore 2/8 per 1000 in i December, 10.14, they are now 3/2.
