TAIHAPE PATRIOTIC MEETING.
A meeting of th c Taihapo and District Patriotic Committee was held last evening, there being present His Worship the Mayor (Mr. A. L. Arrowsmich') chairman, and Messr. E. W. SiSth, M.P., G. Bray. A. James, J. P. Aldridge, and S. Powell.
The chairman reported that ho haft attended the conference at Wellington but nothing very much had come of it. A federation committee-was to be set up. They would not pool) funds and six members were to be elected on this committee from the North Island and six from the South Island. Auckland was to elect two, Wellington two members, and Wairarapa, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay would elect two between them. In electing the two representativs for Wellington, the various societies in the province who -bad monies amounting to £SOOO would have one vote and any who had £50,000' would have two votes. Taihape would therefore be entitled to one vote.
It was decided to support the proposal by the Wanganui Patriotic Society and to write to the Minister suggesting that nominations should be received before the delegates met and voted, and asking that the Conference for the election of repreentativos be held at Palmerston North.
A communication was received outlining the new reuniting scheme, and the Mayor stated that at the last meeting of the Council the question had been discussed and they had resolved to help all they could. Probably a public meeting would be called and a Recruiting Board be set up. On the motion of Mr. James, it was resolved to write the Recruiting Committee to the effect that the Patriotic Committee would co-opcbate witli the local body as suggested in the letter. It was d ecidcd to hold the seud-off for the 14th Reinforcements in the Town Hall on Saturday night. There , will be no charge for admission but f. collection will be made at the door. The Mayor stated that the amount realised for the French Red Cross Society amounted to a little over £4O, Hunterville, on the other hand, had raised £5lO, and he trusted that something more would be done by Taihape. Members generally considered that more money should have been raised, and any profits that may be derived from the send-off on Saturday wil? be devoted to this fund.
