The Taihape Daily Times AND WAIMARINO ADVOCATE.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1916. RECRUITING EXPLANATION.

(With which is incorporated The Tai hape Post and Waimarino News.)

If the recently published Recruiting Boards' scheme has been, in some rnjeasurq, misunderstood, tup Boa.v|£ has, apparently, itself to blame, in the meagreness of the details it furnished. The Board very reasonably assumed that local bodies would be ready, if not eager, to assist by any means in thei rpower in winning the life and death struggle in which our Empire is now involved, at the same time the men composing these bodies were not cognisant of the details of reasoning by which the Board arrived 'at its ultimate decision and it is natural that many of them have not reached similar conclusions. It is unbelievable that a member of any local body is unwilling to strain his dignity even, in 'assisting in the scheme the Recruiting Board has evolved, if only because it is entitled to be considered all that is best under the circumstances. The Premier, as Chairman of the Board, has now furnished explanatory details which 'alter aspects of the scheme as understood by some local bodies, and it seems "to remove all reasonable difficulties that could be raised against giving it whole-souled support. Hereunder we publish the letter referred to, which was received by the Mayor yesterday, and which h has handed to us for publication: —i

His Worsip the Mayor, Taihape, ~ The Recruiting Board desires to remove a misconception that would seem to exist amongst members of some local bodies whose help and cooperation have been sought. The Board does not necessarily ask that they should personally canvass, but it does appeal to them as public men with great responsibilities in this crisis to organise and supervise recruiting work in their district, and to see that each reinforcement quota for heir group area is provided. The Board feels sure that there are many men any women suitable for the work in each district, who would willingly join with local bodies to make the scheme a success—'W. F. Massey, Chairman. Wellington, 22 February, 1916.
