AMUSEMENTS.

BAKER BROS' CIRCUS. Last night Baker Bros' circus gave a performance in Tailiape and there was 'a very large attendance, the seating accommodation proving inadequate. This combination, which came from Australia with a big reputation, is making its first appearance here, and will show a complete change of programme to-night. There are some exceedingly clever artists with the troupe and all the "turns are well worth seeing. Miss Barbarin'a, a wire walker and contortionist is very clever indeed, and is a real star in her line of work. The little Japanese "up. side clown comedy" merchant also walks the silver wire and proves himself to be very clever indeed, while his work in juggling a barrel on his feet is both unique and interesting. Miss La Belle Gertie, billed as the Dental merchant, proved last night to be equal to anyone ever seen here. Suspended in midair, she holds a trapeze by her teeth while Miss Barbarino performs a number of evolutions on the trapeze. The hand balancing and gymnastic work of members of the circus is of a high class order. Three dogs, trained by Lieutenant Cole proved to be very adept as was also the case with the clog and monkeys trained by Happy Jackles. As is usual in Tailiape the buckjumping competitions provided great sport. Several local boys attempted to ride the pony but all met their Waterloo. One well known local boy, however, proved good and stuck to the pony for quite a while, receiving a great ovation. Afterwards the bucking jennet was brought into the ring but no volunteers were forthcoming. Then F. Ashton, a local rider, tried his luck on the horse, but was thrown twice. To-night the same rider, using his own saddle and bridle will endeavour to sit another bronco To-night a local buckjumper will be brought into the ring and one of the circus lads will attempt to ride him. A sum of £5 has been put up by the management and if the lad is thrown the £5 is to be given to the local hospital or to the Patriotic Funds. This member of the circus last night proved to be very skilful with the lasso and it will be interesting to-night to see if he is as clever in the saddle a.-: he is wivh a rope.
