Representatives of Dannevirko local bodies concerned in the Government’s recruiting scheme resolved that, while regretting the Government docs not see its way clear to bring in a Military Service Bill at present, the committee will meantime further the recruiting scheme in every possible way.
FATAL FIRE AT WAIHI
WOMAN BURNT TO DEATH
WAIHI, ’February’ 21
A two-storey boardinghouse contain, mg 'about forty rooms, at Karangahake, seven miles from Waihi, was totally destroyed by fire at 3 o 'clock on Sunday morning, resulting in an c 1 - derleywoman named Dawson being burnt to death. Two other occupants named Slevin and Griffin had very narrow escapes after being badly burned.
FIRE BRIGADES’ CONFERENCE
WELLINGTON, Feb. 21
About 1-10 delegates were present at the opening sitting of the United Fire Brigades’ Conference sitting to-day. The report stated that 530 members had enlisted during the year. Thirtyeight were killed, three were missing, one a prisoner in Constantinople, and 02 sick and wounded. A substantial donation was made among the delegates for the prisoner in Constantinople, named Shoe-bridge, from the FeiMing brigade. The delegates received a hearty welcome from th e Mayor, Councillors, and Citizens’ Committee. A number of fes-tivities-and motor drives have been arranged.
President Campbell (Timaru) thank ed the Mayor for the welcome.
