DEFENCE NOTES.

The 7th Regiment (Territorials) will go into camp on February 28th at Rangiotu, but men who are efficient but have not completed their musketry course will be required to go into camp on the 25th. These men who are not efficient will go into 'camp on the 21st instant.

Within 48 hours of the commence.rnent of the camp, the names of all men absent without leave' w;ill be handed to the police for prosecution. The Principal Medical Office, Wellington, will arrange for the attendance of a sufficient number of Medical Officers at all camps. Territorials who are employed by firms who are working at high pressure to meet military exigencies will be granted leave on application being made.

In other cases leave will only be granted where attendance will cause hardship to the man or his employers, and then only on the distinct understanding that the men attend the annual camp of some other unit or one of the casual camps. In all camp standing orders a paragraph is to be inserted prohibiting the bringing of liquor into camps. No person shall bring any intoxicating liquor on a troop train or supply any liquor to any person en a troop-train. A trocp-train means any railway train or railway carriage which for the time being has been set apart for the use of the Defence forces or which is for the time being chiefly occupied or used by members of those forces. Some units are in the habit of carrying an excessive quantity of pri- ' vate regimental baggage to camp, : thereby greatly increasing railway ; charges. The following scale must ; be strictly adhered to, and any excess weight will be charged against the individual: —Headquarter's Staff and C.O.'s ISOIbs; other mounted officers, 1001 b; dismounted officers, 701 b; warrant officers, 501 b; other ranks, j 201 b. v I
