GERMAN LAND BUYING
It is particularly noticeable in New Zealand, perhaps more so in this part of the North Island, that Germans seem to be mopping up every acre of land that they can lay hands on, and the fact seems to be troubling the minds of a gcod many of our settlers. It is urged that the various Land Boards have definitely refused to permit transfers to people of enemy nationality, and it is not quite understandable why the Government does not adopt a similar course and prevent the transfer of land to those Germans and Austrians, who bid fair to become, in the near future, the chief land proprietors in some districts. Various efforts 'at explanation have been made, but the most favoured hypothesis seems to be that Germans, fearing the defeat of their fatherland by the Allies, and the enactment of
laws here disabling them from owning or holding British land, are taking time by the forelock, with the hope of istill preserving little Germanys in British territory. Another view which we refrain from mentioning, is also current.
