PETROL UP AGAIN.

—♦ RESULT OF HIGH FREIGHTS. POOR FUTURE OUTLOOK. WELLINGTON, yesterday. Petrol an expensive luxury at a sovereign per case seems to be the prospect in New Zealand. This commodity, so widely used in business and farming occupations, could be. bought in Wellington, ex warehouse, last August at 13/10 per case. This was the price paid by those who took direct delivery from, the oil importers. Country customers, of course, paid a higher rate owing to extra handling and railway charges. To-day the same class of petrol costs under the same conditions, 16/8 per case, having gone up 1/- per case on Friday. This rise is in addition to two others within a short period, and is attributable to the extreme difficulty in getting ships to bring oil from America. Freights from the Pacific Co'ast have just, jumped from twelvfe. dollars to fifteen dollars per ton, and the unpleasant prospect of 16 dollars next, month is suggested in a recent issue of a San Francisco newspaper. Petrol and kerosene cases run twenty to the ton, so that the rise is very 'appreciable upon the commodity. Supplies are said to be rather short in New Zealand owing to constant difficulty in obtaining tonnage, a difficulty which does not seem to be decreasing.

The Government tax paid by the Wellington Racing Club in connecti'm with the Janauavy meeting iota'.led £6,149 2/10. It is notified in another column that the G>. Terry, mentioned in a recent debt case, is not Geo. Terry, of Wainui. The German who was arrested in Wellington on Friday as a roanlt of his coversations with the French reservists from Noumea is still in iha hands of the Defence authorities. Inquiries with regard to his case arc no* complete but it is considered probable that he will be interned . on Sorties Island for the period of the war. SHARLAND'S absolutely is 'the' Baking Powder. Purest, strongest and CHEAPEST. SHARLAND'S is bound to rise. Get it from your grocer.-
