ON FIRE. ENTIRELY GUTTED. AUCKLAND, this day. A fire on the ketch, Kereru, is still burning, but well in hand. The hull, which is practically gutted, will be beached this afternoon. A large quantity of oil cargo that wag jettisoned is floating in the harbour, probably not much injured. It is impossible to estimate the damage. LAND FOR SOLDIERS. WELLINGTON, January 27. ' The Land Board to-day received /thirteen applications by returned * soldiers for land; one granted, being the ■first in New Zealand. The others 'were held over for inquiry. FEDERATION OF LABOUR. WELLINGTON, January 27. The Conference of the New Zealand Labour organisations convened by the Federation of Labour has issued Ijp manifesto. It declares opposition to conscription, the introduction of (Which will be resisted to the utmost; says the imposition of conscription would be a grave and unjustifiable reflection on the courage of New Zealanders; upholds the voluntary prin* ciple ;ur-ges improvements in soldiers’ pay and pensions; urges drastic taxation to the extent of the confiscation to the State’s use of all incomes in excess of soldiers’ pay; declares that conscription of wealth should precede conscription of flesh and blood.
