GENERAL CABLE NEWS.

WOOD PULP PROHIBITION. EXCITEMENT IN NEWSPAPER WORLD. LONDON, January 22. Sweden's prohibition of wood pulp Iras occasioned excitement in newspaper offices. There have been many private meetings and conferences with the Board of Trade, but some consider the action a piece of bluff as there is very little exporting till May. Moreover, prolonged prohibition would have a ruinous effect on Sweden. A REASSURING STATEMENT. LONDON, January 22. Advices from the Swedish Board of Trade indicate that the prohibition only effects chemical, not mechanical pulp. The prohibition is not absolute, as exportation licences will be granted. DODGERY OF SHIRKERS. GOVERNMENT ACTION THREATENED. (Reed. 9.20 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. It is officially stated that a number of single men are systematically dodging recruiting appeals by shifting their addresses. Further action is threatened. The Government has agreed to subsidise, pound for pound, the Allies’ Day subscriptions during February,

EXCELLENT NEWS. SHIPPING SHORTAGE TO END. IN THE NEAR FUTURE. (Reed. 8.35 a.ra.) VANCOUVER, January 23. It is considered reasonably certain that the present shortage of tonnage in the Pacific is not of long duration. It is believed the time is ripe for some form of official encouragement tc shipowners. Powerful interests, are contemplating the construction of a large fleet and are only awaiting an opportune moment tc make a demand for large bonuses, in view of the obvious fact that it will be necessary tc construct quickly a number of ships that will be necessary to replace the obsolete types which will be useless after the Avar.

It is officially denied that the Government contemplates giving bonuses to Canadian shipoAvners to the exelu-

sion of American bottoms. Guarantees are being asked in a large capacity, for wind jammers, preferably with auxiliary power, to be substantially and immediately built, shall be extended. The utmost preference will be given to Canadian owned vessels; the preference will probably take the form of remission of harbour dues.
