LUDICROUS BLOCKADE.

BRITISH GRIP TO BE TIGHTENED.

, LONDON, January IS. There is genral expectation that the tightening of the blockade is imminent. The Sunday Times says that the Navy had a particularly trying time in the December gales, bringing hundreds of ships into port. It was heartbreaking to receive instructions to release the great majority of the vessels carrying supplies to neutrals, which Lord Lansdowne admits find their way to Germany. The [Weekly Despatch say s that the knowledge that the richer GerGermans are able to secure unlimited supplies of food through neutrals will shortly produce a more stringent blockade. The Times’ correspondent at Washington says that the newspapers excitedly discuss the blockade, and in- . timate that the British grip on German trade is being strengthened. They point out that American lawyers think the procedure legally indefensible, and suggest that the same results are attainable by declaring a blockade of accessible German ports, and preventing indirect neutral trade through extensions of the contraband list, using the doctrine of continuous voyage.
