BRAVE AMAZONS.

It is no secret that here in France, as in Russia, women are doing their ' : share of the fighting, and right well ' too. I had a long talk with cue of these girl soldiers. She is a most feminine, fine-faced, but delicately- : bui:t girl of twenty-four, very earnest \ and very pretty. She wears a shabby- ; looking uniform, and the three stripes I on her collar denotes her ranks as a sergeant. She tells me that she has j been fighting for a year now, feel s per- i fectly fit, • and ha s only been ill for ' nine days. She comes from Mar- j seilles, and before the war was a stu- ! dent in the Lyons University. When I the war broke out she became a vo- j lunteer, for she thought everybody ought to go. She received her medal for patrol work, and her rank was i also given her for patrol services. She once succeeded in slipping through j the German lines with the cavalry i patrol under her command, and ■■ brought important information. At 1 X she was also in command of , a pati’ol of chasseurs, and after this ! she received the medal. She tells me ; that her friend who joined the force with her is a prisoner of war in Ger- 1 many. She is also a gir’, twenty years old, and was one of the most gallant j and brave soldiers in the force. A ; patrol commander also, and a ser-j geant, she has had her decoration as ' well.
