FATE OF PRIESTS IN CANADA. News received in Montreal states that two Catholic priests and two prospectors have been murdered by a fierce tribe of Eskimos at a point north of Chesterfield inlet, in Hudson Bay territory. After that tragedy the tribe announced their intention of killing •every white man approaching their settlement. As a matter of fact, the Government had not intended to arrest the Eskimos, but merely to instruct them In the white man’s law. The tribe lives 200 miltes inland from Baker Lake, where Inspector Beytes, a sergeant-major, a corporal, and two constables of the' Royal NorthWest Mounted Police’ have pitched their tent for a winter’s work in investigating the case of these mankilling Eskimos. ♦ A certain Tepalue, who acted as Mr. Radford’s guide, says that Mr. Street fought heroically for his life. Hd survived from noon till sundown although his body was full of spearholes. An Eskimo woman finally cut his throat and pushed his body over the cliff. Tepalus saved his life by marrying one of the tribe, but later escaped and told his tale to the police. Inspector Bytes declares that he will go inland, peacefull, if possible, but see them he will, in spite of a?l threats.
