GERMAN KULTUR.
The sinking of the Persia is the crowning infamy of Germany, the nation who wants to impose culture upon the rest of the world. The sinking of the Persia is yet another nail in the coffin of Prussian militarism. The day of reckoning is fast approaching, and when that day arrives, let us show no mercy to the barbarians who kill and massacre innocent men, women, and children. Let us then exact "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth." Germany must be crushed crippled, humbled, beaten to the dust. As long as men like the Kaiser, Von Beth-mann-Hollweg, Von Tirpitz, Von der Goltz, and the Crown Prince of Germany are permitted to occupy this globe, so Dong will tyranny, villainy, and oppression exist. To give an example of their culture, I have in my possession a Flemish newspaper called De Legerbode. Here is one piece of devilry: Berneau. —An inhabitant of this place deposed the following before* Mons. Barbolx, Magistrate:—"l had a brother-in-law, one of the gentlest of men. As he was standing with his wife and children in front of his house, he was arrested by the Germans. Why? Ido not know. An officer put a thick rope round his neck and compelled my brother-in-law's brother to lead him round the city. He was j>l!aced between two German soldiers, who had loaded revolvers in their hands. Moreover, he was forced ' to cry out 'I am a pig, I am a seronndreU I am a dirty Belgian," and also 'Long live Germany." "After five hours of agony, we again saw him pass before us. A German officer came up to him, made him stand on a little dunghill, and said: 'Lift up your head!' Pale as a corpse (through fatigue and suffering) he obeyed. " The officer drew his sword, stuck it into his throat and ripped him open from the throat downwards, just as if he were a bullock. We were hoi: even permitted to approach his mutilated corpse." In the same paper is the following proclamation by Genera'J Von der Goltz:— PROCLAMATION. To the Beligan Army. Bv General Von der Goltz.
"Belgian Soldiers, —You are not fighting for your dear fatherland. On the contrary, you are fighting for Russia to make her mightier, and, above all, you arc fighting for England, who is the sole cause of the present war. From the beginning your newspapers were sold to England and France. They systematically misled you as to the "cause of this war. and they gave you false accounts of the fighting. In one of the orders of the day addressed to yourselves it is stated that the Belgian prisoners of war were forced to fight against the Russians. Your commonsense must tell you that this is impossible. When your comrades return from captivity and- tell you how generously they were treated, you will see how your officers and newspapers have deceived you. Belgian soldiers, yon fought long enough for Russia, for the capitalists of false and treacherous England. You condition is hopeless. Germany on y fights Cor her existence. If you wish to got back to your wives and children, _it vou wish to start your industries again, in one word, if you wish for peace, lav down your arms-then shall you taste the benefits of a welcome and happy peace."
