Sir lau Hamilton says it may be interesting to know that I haA'e here fighting under my orders a purely .Jewish unit. As far as I know this is the first time in the Christian era such a thing has happened. The men who compose it were cruelly driven cut of Jerusalem by the Turks and arrived in Egypt with their families absolutely ■ destitute 'and starving. A complete transport corps was there raised from them for voluntary, service with me against the Turks, whom they naturally detest. These troops were officially described as the ‘Zion Mule Corps,’ and the officers and rank 'and file have shown great courage in taking water and supplies up to the fighting line under heavy fire. > Referring to the recent cable mes- ■ s'age to the effect that much pro-Ger j man matter is appearing in the Japanese newspapers. Mr. T. C. Dawson, .of Wellington, who recently returned from that country, states that the reference did not apply to the betterclass papers that are printed in English ,but there was one paper printed in Japanese only in Osaka—the bigmanufacturing centre —that was printing articles which had a strong proGerman flavour. It was a A r ery Avide-ly-read and poAverful paper, as could bo seen from the manner in which the other papers copied its neAvs and articles. There was little room to doubt that German gold Avas at work throughout the East in respect tc the press.
