ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED.
WOOL POE NEUTRAL COUNTRIES. AUCKLAND, Jan. 7. In regard to wooa export the Hon. Mr. Myers stated to-night that the Imperial authorities, having now definitely instructed their desire that the export of wool to neutral countries should be prohibited, the New Zs.'aland Government are now giving effect to their wishes. Every effort up to Die present lias been made to consider operating interests as far as possible. All applicants for permits in regard to wool purchased at various local sales already held in Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Christchurch, Thnaru, and Dunedin •have been granted the necessary permits to export to neutral countries, but we have now arrived at the position that we must carry out the Imperial Government’s desires. Giving, however, to the very large requirements for military purposes which exist in the United Kingdom, which -have necessarily created a strong demand for our wool, the market should stiil continue strong and ensure satisfactory prices being still obtained. Mr. Myers pointed out that there is no prohibition upon export of wool to the . United Kingdom. It is, however, subject to tli? license system instituted some months ago. Under this system licenses arc granted for shipment, of wool to approved consignees in the Oal Country, but in regard to the future all export to neutral countries is in. accordance with the Imperial Government’s request and absolutely prohibited.
♦STATEMENT BY PREMIER. [ WELLINGTON, Jan. T. Mr. Massey ■ stated to-day that the control of the export of crossbred wool or other material required largely for war purposes rests with the Imperial authorities, who have instructed the New Zealand Government that the export to neutral countries must be prohibited. ‘‘ We have endeavoured to arrange matters with as little inconvenience as possible to aIU concerned, but our instructions arc definite. Needless to say, I regret, the necessity that has arisen for this, but the strong demand and the good prices ruling in Britain should ensure satisfactory prices being obtained hero. I will endeavour to obtain permission for wool already purchased at the wool sales to bo shipped, and I do not anticipate much difficulty about this matter.”
