SOLDIERS’ DEATHS. | | ONE COMMITS SUICIDE. IANOTHER FOUND IN HARBOUR. ( I WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. I Private William Dixon, of tlio Ninth l Reinforcements, aged 35, who came from Dunedin, committed suicide in Trcntham Hospital yesterday. He was admitted a few days ago suffering from an apopleptic fit. While his attendant was getting tea for him he •hanged himself. At tlie inquest the Coroner returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily insane, no blame being attachable to anyone. The decomposed body of a soldier was found floating off Miramar wharf /to-day. In one of the pockets was a | camp pass bearing the name of F. T. I Patterson, New Zealand Rifles.
A STREET DISTURBANCE
DUNEDIN, January 3
A serious disturbance in "Walker Street on New Year’s Eve, caused in the first place by some circus hands insulting Syrian women, resulted in four circus employees appearing in the Police Court to-day on charges eluding assault and using obscenfe language. The charge against one man was dismissed, and the other three e'ach received three months’ imprisonment, Mr. Bartholomew characterising their conduct as blackguardly.

STILL 300 MEN SHORT
WELLINGTON, Jan. 3
Difficulty is still being experienced in completing the Eleventh Eeinforeements, though during the past month the most urgent appeals have been made to the eligible manhood of New Zealand to make up the number. The Defence headquarters announced this morning that on New Year's Day the Elevenths were still over 300 m<n short. During the past week the South Island had not done as well as the North in sending me'n into camp to reduce the deficiency. A considerable spurt was also required to ' nish the necdssary number of men for the Twelths being mobilised on the 10th inst.

'WELLINGTON, January 3 ;
Private Arthur Edward Taylor, of E .Coy., of the 9th Reinforcements, died at Trentham Hospital on New Year’s Day from cerebro-spinal meningitis. He was taken ill suddenly last week. Deceased, who was 24 years of age, was a son of Mr. John Taylor, of Whakapirau, North Auckland. The body was sent north to-day for interment. GISBORNE FATALITIES.

Archibald Stewart, aged 60, suicided by cutting his throat with a razor in the hospital. William Crump, a boy of 3£ years, wa& thrown from a trap and killed at Matawai.
A SOLDIER SERIOUSLY INJURED,
IN A RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
CARTERTON, This Day.
An accident occurred at the Featherston railway station this morning. .As a troop train drew in at 1.20 a.m,, a young man, Private Power, E[ Coy., 10th Reinforcements, slipped and feil between the platform and train. Hfe wa s seriously crushed and was removed to the Greytown Hospital
where he lies in a precarious condition.
