TAIHAPE FREEZING WORKS.
KILLING COMMENCED TESTER DAY.
LARGE ATTENDANCE OF FARMERS.
The opening of the freezing works of the Otaihape Farmers ’ Meat and Produce Co., Ltd., took place yesterday, when some lambs were killed and dressed.
There was a large attendance of spectators, mostly farmers, and the Chairman of Directors (Mr. H. D. Bennett) briefly addressed them. He congratulated the shareholders of the Company on the establishment of the works. It was only a short time, he said, since they had discussed the pros and cons of establishing works in the district, and then only quite recently the foundation-stone had been laid. Now the first lambs were to be put through. He would ask those present to give three hearty cheers to the shareholders for establishing the works in the district.
After the- cheers had been given, Mr. Bennett stated that he hoped the first fourteen sheep and the first bullock would be given by the owners for patriotic purposes. They were not yet ready to receive beef, but in a few days’ time everything would bo in order. They had managed to secure a splendid staff and had been promised great support. On the .word being given the butchers commenced work, great interest being shown by the spectators. The first man on the board to complete a lamb was heartily applauded. The line of lambs put through were on the light side, it being a little early yet for fat lambs in this district.
