According to a North Otago paper, that necessary evil, rabbit poisoning, is rapidly killing off all New Zealand 's native game. Wekas, once to be heard anywhere in the hills at night, are now no more. Their inquisitive nature renders their complete extinction a matter of tinve wherever poison is laid. Several much-travelled letters 'have recently been acknowledged by some ■New Zealand soldiers at the front. It appears that the letters were first addressed from Wellington to the soldiers in question when they were with the garrison at Samoa. The soldiers, however, -had left Samoa for New Zealand before the letters arrived, and the correspondence was readdressed to the men, care of Trentham Camp. Here, again, the letters missed the men, avlio had left New Zealand with the Fifth Reinforcements, and the authorities re-address-ed them again, the result being that the men to whom they Avere directed eventually received them at Lemnos.

An incident that occurred in Dunedin the other day had about it something dramatic (says the Otago Daily )Times). The principal characters in the scene were a returned trooper, I who is recovering from two serious wounds, and a young man about 25 years of age, apparently eligible for 'service.' The soldier had entered a shop, and, whilfe making a purchase, was accosted by his acquaintance, who commenced to talk about the war. The former, however, showed no inclination to discuss the topic with the first speaker, and broadly hinted as much. Apparently the eligible man pursued the conversation by asking the trooper when he was going ibaek to the front, and this exasperated the man in khaki, who replied: '"'Well, look here, if it's not an impertinent question, when are you goring to enlist?"
