BRITISH "FRIGHTFULNESS."
SHELLS THAT SCARE THE GERMANS. Interesting details of the new smoke ! shells being used by the British troops were given by Private R. Horner, of Rnshden, in an interview. “The new shells we -have got, and used, in this big battle, are, in my opinion, some of the best we havortfehad, ” he says. “If they don’t kill|the Germans I reckon they would frigqj£«n them to death, as they don’t half make a row when they burst. We have got some ‘ frightfulness ’ how, as well as the Germans. “We call the new shells 'Lloyd George Specials.’ They make a noise like an express train as they rus*i through the air. “On the morning of the advance I had a fine view of the bombardment. At day break it was impossible to sec the- German trenches for the smoke. Xt looked as if a thick mist hung over I them. Before our troops advanced every few yards along the German trenches we dropped a smoke bourt), these being used for the first time. It is a new idea, the object being to screen the advancing troops from the observation of the enemy. A very interesting letter -has been received in Wanganui giving an account of a Rugby football match played at Lemnos Isand between Australian and New Zealand teams. The New Zealanders won by 33 points to nil, after what is described as a fast and 'willing game. The match was play - ed on the beach when the tide was out, and with a ‘'soccer” ball. kicking was found to be an impossibility, not one try being converted. Tho New Zealand team had quite an AllBlack flavour, the rear division being: Full-back, George Murray (Auckland and North Island) three-quarters, Mars (Otago), Cut-Mll (Otago and New Zealand), Bertrand (TaranaM); five-eighths, S. Cameron (Taranaki), E. Roberts (Wellington and New Zealand); half. Wood (Taranaki). Some well-known players figured among the forwards, two being McNab (Auckland )and Taylor (Taranaki and New Zealand).
