PRESENTATIONS TO PRINCIPALS

Last evening the Taihape Gymnasium Club held ■; social, and a ve-rv pleasant evening was spent in dancing. Songs were rendered by Mr. A. Walker and Miss G. A. OLlercnshaw, and Miss Missen played a pianoforte solo. During the evening the Rev. R. R. Catherwood, on behalf of the Club, made presentations to Mr. A. 0. Nickolils, Miss Bason, and Mr. F. W. Somerville.

In making the presentation of •> framed enlargement of the members to Mr. Nicholls. ami a silver wristlet watch (the gift of the lady members'.. Mr. Catherwood referred in glowing terms to the qualities ef the recipient. He said it gave him groat pleasure to

as an athlete lie was the chammon gymnast of Australasia, and had given his services to the Club freely. The members wanted him to undcrstonc* that his action in this respect was most highly appreciated. Mr. Nicholls was a believer in the three-storeyed man—the physical, intellectual, and spiritual. He had conferred an honour on the members of the Club by teaching them and they had conferred an honour on him by putting him in charge of 50 or 00 gir>.. On all siCeall spoke of Mr. Nicholls as a gen;man of the finest quality and of the highest honour. He had given the-m nothing but leasure and had done good in every way. Now he had crownecr it all by volunteering and giving his services at the Eraipre's ' call. (Applause). On rising to respond, Mr. Nicholii? was greeted with prolonged applause. He stated that he could not adequately express his feelings. What little ho had done had been a pleasure to bin- 1 and he had received the greatest support from members. He would take the opporuntity of thanking them rothe> way they had worked for the display, this being the real reason of the success of that evening. He sincerely thanked them for their present. (Applause). Mr. Catherwood then presented a lady's handbag- to Miss Bason, who, at great inconvenience and I'oss of time, had played the music for the Ciur right through the season, an action which the members greatly appreciated.

Mr. White briefly responded for the recipient.

Members also made a present of n framed enlargement of members to Mr. F. W. Somerville, who, however, was unavoidably absent. Mr. Catherwoo* referred in eulogistic terms to the recipient, and stated that they coul<s not speak too highly of him as a gentleman, an athlete, and a public-spirit-ed man. Mr. MeCormick received the photo on behalf of Mr. Somervil'le and briefly responded on his behalf.
