New York is joyous'above the rest of the country, perhaps; but that is because New York not only has the war orders, but also the war stocks to play with. New York is instinctively a gamblers’ town. Tin induoime of Mall Street may become dominant at any time. Lot there be sensationa* movements of stocks and New York cannot resist the temptation of rushing into the get-rich-quick area and trying to make a million on a 10 per cent, margin.
GREECE THE MYSTERIOUS. VA RIO! 78 REPORTS. EOXDOX, Dec. 12. Though diplomatic circles in Athens believed yesterday morning - that Greece had at last given the Entente a plain and favourable ans Aver, later repoits indicated that this AioAv avus over-sanguine. It appears that the Greek attitude is unchanged, but the Entente is more impressed by the latest assurance. The two main questions outstanding were military and political. The latter must be settled when the Allies decide Avhether to ihold or leave Salonika, but the military problem brooks no delay in vieAv of the sudden dramatic turn of events on the Anglo-French front. The Entente Ministers again urged M. Skouloudis to give a prompt reply, intimating that the War Council in Paris viewed \A - ith displeasure the dragging out of profitless pourparlers. These representations were backed up by communications from the AngloFrench GiOAmrnments. First reports stated that Greece had accepted the demands, but soon afterwards Reuter’s Athens eorresopndent cabled that At. Skouloudis had made the usual reply that Greece was Avilling to make every concession provided it did not affect her sovereignty or neutrality, but it was stated on Greek official authority that the Entente Ministers, in a subsequent discussion, recognised the Government as sincerity in seeking a satisfactory solution, and informed the Premier that coercive measures would cease. The Allies have constructed telegraphs, and telephones, but need further liberty of movement. King Constantine seemed bettor disposed towards the Allies.
