“DRY SUNDAY.”
TEMPERANCE REVOLUTION IN CHICAGO. Chicago on Sunday, October 10, experienced the first "dry” Sunday in its history. Every saloon in the city was closed, and no liquor was obtainable. The Mayor had tried In various awys to curtail Sunday drinking, and all other methods fairing he issued an order that all saloons were to close on Sunday. •Sunday in Chicago is a day of outings. picnics, and excursions of all kinds, and the saloon-keepers, deciding that the best way to secure the abrogation of the order was to obey it, and so rouse the anger of tlie citizens by demonstrating the unleasantuess of a "dry” Sunday, agreed among themselves rigidly to close every saloon. This was done, with the result that Chicago was dry, thirsty, arid angry. Mass meetings were held at night ro protest against the order. The quietceiement in the city highly approved the, order, and the Mayor declared that- he would persist in it.
