KAITIEKE COUNTY COUNCIL.
At the annual meeting of the above Council Cr. L. S. Ford was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. At a special meeting held immediately afterwards it was decided, on the motion of Cr. Crocker and Alan? sen to aisc a loan of £I,OOO over the Oio special rating area. An, ordinary meeting followed. Mr. Davey's tender for clearing slips on Hikimutu road was accepted. Price. £l3. Tenders for Waimarino-Retauke formation were discussed. Cr. Grice considered .hat the tenders were so high that, considering the money they had in hand, they could not accept either. It was resolved, on the motion of Crs. Grice and Ford, that neither tender be accepted, but that an endeavour be made to let the work in smaller contracts, or do it by day work. Mr. McLean's tender £1,049 13/1) for formation of the Oio Road was accepted. It was determined that the £5,000 borrowing limit from the Government Advances Department be allocated as follows:—To Oio loan No. 2 £I,OOO, Wanganui bridge at Taumarunui £1,500, Waimarino - Retaruke £2,000. The Chairman, Raglan County Council, write submitting a resolution to the effect that Councils do not employ single men, and asked the Council to pass a similar resolution. The Chariman said it Avas all right for old Counties who had formed roads and good access to dispense with such men. They, however, could not do so. It was remarked that production and opening up of country for production was in a sense as iniportaift as sending men. The Clerk shoAved that the Native rates on the different ridings were very considerable, amounting as they
! did to £1,104 18/10, as against Euro--1 pean rates, £3,024 .10/5. i The Chairman said that in | Owhango riding the Native rate exi eeeded the European, and hardly any . had been collected out of the £791 had I been collected out of the £791 17/ i payable. It was time, he said, that they act promptly. It was resolved that the Clerk be granted power to take further steps regarding collection of Native and European rates. j The Minister of Public Works rwote to the effect tht his Dcpart- [ ment proposed to employ men itself on road works, and money would not lln future be granted to local bodies to the same extent as previously. The J Department would itself do the work. it Cr. Alanson pointed out that it was important to proceed ith obtaining the grant to give access to the ] new school at Raurimu. The chairman of the committee had approached him asking him to expedite the matj ter. The grant had already, he un- ! derstood,. been made. If the work were not done the timber to build the school could not be delivered on the ground.—The Clerk as instructed to rwite to the Minister of Public Works pointing out the urgency of the matter. The Clerk as instructed, on the mo- | tion of Crs. Morris and Alanson, to 1 advertise calling for applications for 1 County Engineer at a salary of £ooo j per annum and £SO per annum horse i allowance. r : Instructions were given to fence off [two big holes and make the road pass[able between Raurimu and Waimar-,-ino, and that the bridge near Erua [ and the road be opened for traffic.
