BORROWING AND TAXATION.
SIR JOSEPH WARD’S VIEWS,
DUNEDIN, Dec. 9
Sir Joseph Ward, interviewed today, and discussing the question of borrowing, said he was of opinion that it would be unnecessary for some time to go on the market. It was very improbable the Government would again need to enter the local market, as the loan money in hand would enable them to carry on till 1917, when the war would probably 1 ' over. Regarding further taxation, he said it was impossible to say what would be required in the future. If the war ended within a year from now it was probable nothing further in the form of increased taxation would be required. He qualified that statement by cmhasising the impossibility of forecasting the actual position in the future. He was hopeful the war would be over, but he was satisfied if it proved otherwise, all sections of the community, recognising the enormous value of the issue, owuld gladly meet the requirements.
