APPEAR AT MANGAWEKA COURT.

HEAVY PENALTIES INFLICTED,

A WARNING TO OTHERS

At the sitting of the Mangawoka Magistrate’s Court at Manga weka this morning, before Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., several territorials appeared in answer to various- charges of failing to render personal service, and convictions were registered in each ease and heavy lines inflicted.

In addressing the Court during the hearing of these cases, the presiding Magistrate remarked that men who shirked their duty at a time such a? the present should be made to pay towards the cost of the defence of the country. He was not disposed to inflict light fines, as lie considered shirkers, at a time like this, required “shaking up,” and touching their pockets appealed to them more than military detention.

• A. K. Coventry appeared in answer to two charges, one of failing to render personal service as required by the Defence Act, 1909, and the other for failing to notify change of address to the Defence authorities. He 0 stated that he was parading at Nelson. but since'coming to Mangawcka had not received any notification from the Defence Department to attend drill. The Magistrate pointed out that the onus was on defendant to notify any change of address. Defendant would be convicted and fined £5.

E. King, of Oh i ngaiti, was simiHar]y charged, and on the first was fined £5 and on the second £2. H. Floyd was charged with failing to register and also with failing tc render personal service. The hearing of the first charge was adjourned until the next sitting of the Court, hat on the second ho aws convicted and fined £5 and was also deprived of civil rights for three years. The Magistrate remarked that this appeared to be a particularly bad case.

A. Lohs, in answer to a charge of failing to attend parades, pleaded that he lived outside the training re -

dins. The evidence showed that defendant lived within one Invar’’s ride of the training centre, Mangawcka, and the Bench ruled that he was liable for not attuning. He was convicted and fined £5.

The cases were conducted by Sta.ff-Sergeant-Major Turkey. on 'behalf of the Defence Department.
