GERMAN DISCIPLINE.
"The German discipline is a marvel in itself" (says a Rusian ccTrespondent of the "Evening Standard"). "Every soldier has in his possession a special ration, that is called the iron ration. This ration may be eaten only in an extreme case, and then not without an order from an officer. During our invasion of Eastern Prussia, we frequently took as prisoners German soldiers who wandered in the local forests for seven or eight days without food or drink. In nearly every case this ration was found upon them untouched. 'Why did you not eat It?' we ask with surprise. 'lt is not permitted,' was the invarible answer, and, as there was no officer to give the needed order, these poor Germans starved without daring to touch the ration that was in their knapsack."
