GALLIPOLI DAY.

The committee of ladies who organ

Bay Culiecuoiib nave earneu aie vuauivb an<i admiration or every section of our commun-ty. lire time tor maning arrangements sliurt, a higniy ' successful carnival had just closed, and yet, without any expense whatever, these ladies have /raised considerably over one hundred' pounds in small sums in only one day’s labour. It is an achievement that should be satisfactory to them and a source of pridfe to everybody else. It may not be out of place to say that whether the exigencies of the conduct of this fearful war have demanded men o/r money, the Taihape district has proved to be ever ready to respond equally with the most

patriotic and loyal community of the

Dominion. The Gallipoli Day contributions were for a special and separate purpose; they wejre to provide a ’Xmas gift for all our soldiers at Gallipoli, whether they be New Zealanders or British Tommies. The pay of the Overseas forces is very much higjhek than that of the Tommies and while our men are assured of many comforts the ordinary Tommy can only longingly look on. It was a noble thought that prompted

;he proposal a Gallipoli Day, and

if other districts jhave done as well proportionately as Taihape did our thoughts may travel to the Dardanelles on ChnVmas morning and we may view a mental picture that will amply repay u$ for the trifling sacrifices we

have made. The ladies’ committee, and particularly the Mayoress, have well earned the public thanks and congratulations. fo'r, we understand their splendid achievement was entirely without expense. The total results strongly indicate that if occasion should arise in future for anything of the kind, a com mittpp of ladies is the ideal body to refer it to.
