WOOL SALE.
OPENED IN WELLINGTON TO-DAY.
KEEN COMPETITION EXPIXTED.
The first Wellington wool sale of the
present season opened in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall at 9 o'clock this morning. The total amount to be offered is 5.090 bales, or about 3.300 bales less than at the ing sale Jast year. This fact, together with the news of high prices in other centres, will make for spirited bidding, and it is expected that high prices will be realised. The reduction in the quantity of wool offering at the regular sales is due to heavy private buying, both for local consumption and for export (particularly to America), it being estimated that something like 93,OOObales have changed hands without
going to the auction room. One of the factors of bringing about high prices this season is the increase in the local demand for wool conse-
quent upon the large Government contracts in connection with the troops. The New Zealand woolien factories will be requiring heavy supplies during the next twelve months, and arrangements have been made, with State assistance, to see that their needs are provided for. New Zealand manufacturers have bought wool in store in considerable quantities, the price to be fixed in accordance with the rates ruling at auction. American buyers who have been operating freely elsewhere are in Wellington to-day, and it has been made evident already that they are prepared to pay big prices. The United States manufacturers have taken enormous contracts in connection with the war. and their local supply of wool cannot meet their needs. It is expected that very large shipments of New Zealand wool will cross the Pacific, this season. The order of to-day's sate, with the quantities offered, is as follows: — Bales. Murray, Roberts and.
