Harold Gillespie, aged 22, son of one of the original Tangitu settlers, was drowned to-day, while crossing the Mapui stream on horseback. He had just enlisted. DROWNED WHILE CROSSING A RIVER. TAUMARUNUI, This Day. Morris Harding, labourer, was drowned to-day while crossing the Okura River, at Mikoniho. OWNERS REFUSE TO SELL. TAUMARUNUI TOWNSHIP FREEHOLD. TAUMARUNUI, This Day. A meeting of the owners of the Taumarunui township declined to sell the: freehold to the Government for £63,000. AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. SPRING MEETING. * £2OOO TO PATRIOTIC FU|ND. AUCKLAND, This Day. The Auckland Racing Club has agreed to give the profits of its spring meeting to the Patriotic Fund, and is guaranteeing a donation of not less than £2OOO, thougfh the meeting resulted in no profit. This sum will be donated with the Government tax on tote returns and new dividends, and it states that the tax amounted to £,SI4. The club makes a loss on the meetin of £337. The Club has also authorised the payment of ordinary land tax and 25 per cent, additional war gradu-' ated tax and super-graduated tax, £727 4/9 CHRISTCHURCH SPRING MEETING CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Canterbury meeting was continued to-day under brilliant conditions, and a good attendance. Results: Hurdles. —Aruake 1. Art 2, Vascular 3. - Scr.: Crib. Time, 3.15 1-5. Hatana and C,yra were three lengths away. { N.Z. CHEESE FOR THE ARMY. ARRANGEMENT WITH IMPERIAL AUTHORITIES. WELLINGTON, November 12. There are being distributed to cheese proprietaries, dairy factories, and others interested details of an arrangement submitted by the Government and approved by representatives of the industry in regard to the purchase by the Imperial authorities of New Zealand cheese. The arrangement comes | into operation forthwith. The price fixed by the Imperial Government is 7id per lb free on board an ocean steamer for first grade full creamery cheese. Second grade cheese is not acceptable. Factories will continue regarding shipping space, to include the •cheese requisitioned. A SHIRKER PUNISHED. PALMERSTON N., November 12. "A shirker of the worst class" was "Police-Sergeant Henry's description of a young- man named Beavis, charged at the Court with failing to render personal service. He Ihas been prosecuted ten times. The officer pointed out that, under the Deefnce Act, accuiji could 'be deprived of civil rights for a period not exceeding ten years, and made -application for such a penalty. The Bench inflicted a fine of £3 and costs, and deprived accused of civil rights for five years.
